I thought we would take the Mazda school but he was having none of that – much to my surprise he wanted to take the open-wheel school. We took the 3-Day, Advanced 2-Day Schools, some Lapping, and finally decided to try a race at Laguna in 2007. We both survived and tried another one that season. We started in the back of the pack and worked our way up a little. I enjoyed the racing and set a goal of becoming a mid-pack racer so I would have more folks to race. I ran 3 races at Laguna last season and finally got to about mid-pack so I am happy about that.
Ross Jaffe recommended this site. I asked him about driving suits and he thought this site would be helpful.
My vehicles are pretty boring: 1999 Ford Explorer and a 2000 Jeep Wrangler. I usually drive the Explorer but make it a point to drive the Jeep the week before Lapping or Racing to get used to a clutch and practice heel-and-toe downshifting. Now the instructors know why I am such a mess in Turns 2 and 11 at Laguna!
I hope to run more races this year and maybe get some experience in the rain. I am working full-time as a mechanical engineer in the aerospace industry and unfortunately my racing is dependent on being fully employed. I euphemistically refer to my employer as my “Sponsor.”
I am also interested in learning more about the engineering aspects of racing. I follow the IRL and wonder if many of the problems experienced by Andretti Autosports the last few years are due to losing their good engineers.

> Welcome to Skippy Forums. We are asking all new and yet-to-post members to take the time to post a small thread introducing yourself > and sharing your interests.

> - How you got into racing.
When I was a kid, I lapped up racing, walking downtown instead of lunch on summer Mondays to get the New York Times to get the weekend's GP results. Ummm, I suppose I have to date myself, but I had to wait 'til Monday for the train to bring the paper from New York. And the races were won by guys like Brooks and Fangio. As soon as I got out on my own, I got an F Modified (a horrendous car that makes me cringe every time I think about it - bored-out Alfa 1500cc Veloce engine in an Elva Mk 2-A body) and tried to race it. I spent a great amount of time in the garage, scrounging parts, fabricating part by hand, made it to the track several times, to the grid somewhat fewer. Then, in 1967, I got a Formula Vee, campaigned that for two seasons, and in the fall of 1968, I was plotting how I could get into Formula Ford. Then I got married in January of 1969. Now, forty-two years later I've finally worked my way back to plotting how I can get into Formula Ford.
> - How you found this website.
The first logical step toward a return to racing was school at Lime Rock (about an hour north of home). I signed up for the August 24th sessions. The process led me to the forums.
> - What vehicles you play with at home and on the track.
- My daily driver is a 2005 Jeep Cherokee lump, acceptable only if referred to as 'my tow car.'
- I'm second owner of a very close to original black '73 911T driver that comes out to play on good days.
- Some day, I'll get my brother's 1938 Rolls 25/30 back on the road. That'll never be more than a driver either, but a terrific driver.
- In between, I squirt around on a '99 BMW R1100S bike.
- I have an off-road scooter that I harness my two huskies to. Some of those rides are the scariest I've ever had on wheels.
> - Your future plans in respect to racing.
Whoa. One step at a time. Show up at school. Beyond that? We'll see.
> - What keeps you busy during the day? Job, School etc.
- Retired mechancal engineer - plenty of useless but fun projects cooking.
- Competitive and recreational canoe poling
- The dogs take up an unbelievable amount of time
> ....or anything else worth sharing.
Naw. Figuring the above stuff wasn't worth sharing, but you asked...

Tue, 17 Aug 2010 13:49:30 GMTHello everyone, my name is Simon and I am twenty two.
I got into racing years ago when my Dad simply brought home a few magazines. I did my first kart race around seven or so and was entirely hooked. I continued that, I've driven shifters, sprint, even a superkart. When I was fifteen I started autocrossing a bit before building an SCCA road race car and running track days in it. I've done loads of track events and even have had the chance to drive many great cars, one of my favorites a GT3 Cup car.
I've been trying to figure out my 2011 season and while browsing the Petit schedule saw you all were running as a support race, which immediately lead me to looking at this series again. I've always been a fan of the school and series but have not participated in any of it.
My goals in racing is to race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans or even Petit Le Mans. I've always had a huge passion for endurance racing. When I was younger I use to race against myself in a school parking lot for hours until I was completely dead. I don't know why, just endurance racing really gets my blood flowing.
Right now racing is basically my life, I am about to return to college after a couple of years absence to get my major in business. I recently bought an ex SCCA SSC Neon ACR race car that I am turning into an ITA car for my own pleasure and cheap track time. It's a lot of fun.
Some questions I have though are:
-How hard is it to get a sponsor in this series? The national series appeals to me due to the running with larger events, that's always a plus.
-How equal are the cars usually?
-Is there a lot of drama on and off the track? I've spoken with other drivers in numerous series and a lot of series have that hidden drama. Any here?
I have a few options next season, the Skip Barber program appeals to me for many reasons such as the cost, the arrive and drive style, the ladder, etc.
I use my racing as a business though, my passion is in driving but growing up in a non rich family meant I had to pave my own way and I QUICKLY grasped the idea that to race I had to treat it as a business. What would a sponsor want, can I provide that in a series, etc.
Anyway, I look forward to meeting some of you all soon and learning more on this site. :)
-Simon
